Saudi Arabia Relocation: The Assignee Process
26 January 2024

Since launching our Saudi Arabia office in early 2023, we have been inundated with requests from a diverse range of clients regarding relocation into this unique marketplace. Our expert local team has had to grow rapidly to accommodate the increasing number of enquiries to ensure that we can seamlessly assist companies and assignees with their new KSA journey. Given the potential of this lucrative destination, we anticipate the numbers to rise even further in 2024 and beyond. Our top priority as the region’s leading provider of relocation, immigration and corporate services is to make our clients and assignees feel supported by a trusted resource that can navigate the nuances of Saudi Arabia relocation, from the immigration processes to dependent sponsorship, home search and school placements. We know all too well how unique the relocation process is in each country and Saudi Arabia is no different in having its own specific requirements and practices. Here is our overview of what to expect as an assignee when it comes to Saudi Arabia relocation.

Step by Step: The Assignee Process

At EER Middle East we know all about the expat experience. Our company was founded by expats who wanted to provide reliable solutions to prospective expats across the region and is now run by visionary expats who continue to champion this aim. Our team of diverse nationalities are better equipped to empathise with our assignees and can offer a more comprehensive, hands-on approach that will make them feel at home quicker. We are also aware of the potential pitfalls to successful onboarding and how to overcome them, such as how vital housing can be and that the wrong accommodation provisions can be a major reason for failed assignments.

Step 1: Getting to know you

As with all of our locations, the first step in the Saudi Arabia relocation process is for our local experts to review the needs of the assignee and identify their bespoke pathway to residency. We take the time to find out what your priorities are in terms of housing, community and visas, whether you require sponsorship and schooling for dependents and what your overall outlook is for your Saudi experience.

Step 2: Getting to know the location

Next it is crucial to give each assignee an orientational overview of Saudi Arabia, including what to expect, a thorough city briefing, cultural norms to be aware of and how the relocation, immigration and onboarding processes will work. We lay out the steps in the Destination Services Program and manage the expectations of our assignees so there are fewer surprises on the horizon.

Step 3: Getting the right documentation

Depending on your requirements, the range of documentation needed could vary quite significantly and there could be several levels of authentication and attestation to complete. Our team will explain exactly what certifications and paperwork you will need to provide for each stage of the relocation process and assist you with acquisition, translation and attestation.

Step 4: Getting you the right home

Our Saudi Arabia team have trusted relationships with key agents, landlords and leasing managers, ensuring they can provide you with reliable and verified options to suit your needs. Prior to your arrival, we will already have identified a selection of locations and prospective accommodation options to suit your preferences. Perhaps you need to be close to the office or schools? You may prefer a private residence or a compound? Maybe you want to be close to the city centre or nearer specific landmarks or attractions? When you arrive, we will accompany you on viewings of your top choices and oversee the process of making an offer, negotiating a deal and confirming a lease agreement on your preferred apartment or villa. We will also conduct a pre-inspection, coordinate security deposits, deal with online portal registration and rental payments as well as all of the necessary utility connections.

Step 5: Getting you settled

The final part of the assignee process involves making sure you have everything you need to feel comfortable in your new home. This is where we can assist with elements such as obtaining a driving license, opening bank accounts, setting up medical care provisions and providing expert guidance on local customs and cultural differences you need to be aware of. We can also answer all of those crucial lifestyle questions, including where you can find the best coffee and the must-visit restaurants.

If you are relocating to Saudi with a family and have young children, we also provide assistance when it comes to education. Our local team have established relationships with schools and staff, so they can help you select your preferred schools and curriculum, set up tours and take you through the application and registration process.

Unique Aspects to Saudi Arabia Relocation

Whilst the overall relocation and immigration process for every country is unique, there are some key elements that are worth noting for those interested in relocating to Saudi Arabia. One of the most major is the presence of compounds. Accommodation options for assignees in Saudi typically fall into two categories, compound and off-compound. The compounds in KSA are like mini villages and towns, with their own security and gated surroundings that encompass a wide range of properties as well as amenities such as gyms, meeting halls, shops, kids’ playgrounds, sports courts and swimming pools. Compound properties are also inclusive of furniture, appliances, management fees and utility costs. Whether you opt for a compound or off-compound property, the rent for either is paid annually and, as of January 2024, must now by paid via the Ejar platform, an online portal run by the government that is designed to enhance the transparence of the rental market and ensure tenants and landlords are protected.
